FAQ
How do I homeschool in Colorado?
This page on our website will give you the simplified version of how to homeschool in Colorado.
How do I choose curriculum?
We offer consultation sessions for this! Please contact us for availability.
Do homeschoolers have to test in Colorado?
No! You have the option of your child testing OR having an evaluation. These are very different options!
Can Colorado homeschoolers opt out of testing?
Homeschoolers do not have an "opt out" like public school students. However, homeschool students have the option to evaluate, which is very different from testing and is the closest legal option to "opting out."
What information do I share with you for the evaluation?
You can provide a written explanation of your child's learning in the registration form. You can also email us photos of projects, short video clips, scanned copies of work, a list of books read, and/or anything else that shows your child is learning! See our ideas and suggestions on possible samples and examples you can email. You're not limited to what we have listed. You do NOT need to send everything listed. Our ideas are only to serve as a starting point to help you decide what to send. We love seeing new, creative ways that show learning!
Why do I need to choose a "speed" for documentation completion on the scheduling form?
This allows us to offer an expediated service and easily prioritize client needs.
My child is "behind" grade level. Will he/she be able to pass an evaluation?
Evaluations are NOT pass/fail! They are for showing learning and growth, so every homeschool child can use the evaluation option to meet state law requirements.
I don't want to test my child, but I'd like to know where he/she is academically. Will an evaluation give me this information?
Our basic evaluations meet all state law requirements, but do not give detailed information. We are planning to offer in-depth evaluations in the future.
Can my child have an evaluation done to meet state requirements AND be tested, just for my own curiosity?
Yes. The evaluation documentation is the only paperwork you have to turn in to the district where you filed your letter of intent. You can have your child take a nationally standardized test and keep the results to yourself for your own personal information. No need to pass it on to the district if you already have a documented evaluation.
In Colorado, when do I need to have an evaluation done?
If you filed a notice of intent with a school district, evaluation (or testing) must be done in the odd grade years (3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th), starting with 3rd grade. The evaluation can be done at any point during the school year. Most people choose to have them completed in the late winter/early spring months. While there is no legal deadline for evaluations when turning in them to the district where you have filed your notice of intent, we recommend filing your completed evaluation documentation with the school district in the late spring or summer.
If you registered with an umbrella school, you'll need to verify their evaluation requirements. These vary by umbrella school. Each umbrella school also has their own deadlines for submitting evaluation documentation to them.
In Virginia, when do I need to have an evaluation done?
All homeschool students, regardless of grade level, must do an evaluation (or testing) every year in Virginia. You must file your completed evaluation documentation with your district superintendent by August 1st.
I am registered with CHEC. Can you do an evaluation for me?
Yes, we'd love to! A basic evaluation is what you will want to schedule with us.
I think I want to homeschool my kids next year, but don't know how to start. Can you help me?
