FAQ

How do I homeschool in Colorado?
This page on our website will give you the simplified version of how to homeschool in Colorado.

How do I choose curriculum?
We offer mini-consultation sessions just for this! Please see our curriculum consultation info here.

Do homeschoolers have to test in Colorado?
No!  You have the option of your child testing OR having an evaluation. These are very different options! See which one might work best for your family by using our Guide to Choosing.

Can homeschoolers opt out of testing?
Homeschoolers do not have an "opt out" like public school students. However, homeschool students have the option to evaluate, which is very different from testing and is the closest legal option to "opting out."

What do I email to you for the online evaluation?
You can email us photos of projects, short video clips, scanned copies of work, a list of books read, anything that shows your child is learning! See our ideas and suggestions on possible samples and examples you can email.  You're not limited to what we have listed.  You do NOT need to send everything listed.  Our ideas are only to serve as a starting point to help you decide what to send.  We love seeing new, creative ways that show learning!

Why do I need to choose a time for a basic online evaluation?
It's a technology issue. Don't worry about the time (choose whatever is available on the day you prefer.) You can send info/samples any time after scheduling through midnight the day you've scheduled.

My child is "behind" grade level.  Will he/she be able to pass an evaluation?
Evaluations are NOT pass/fail!  They are for showing learning and growth, so every homeschool child can use the evaluation option to meet state law requirements.

I don't want to test my child, but I'd like to know where he/she is academically.  Will an evaluation give me this information?
An in-depth evaluation is probably your best option.  It will meet the state law requirements and provide you with information about where your child is academically (similar to a traditional report card.)

Can my child have an evaluation done to meet state requirements AND be tested, just for my own curiosity?
Yes.  The evaluation documentation is the only paperwork you have to turn in to the district where you filed your letter of intent. You can have your child take a nationally standardized test and keep the results to yourself for your own personal information.  No need to pass it on to the district if you already have a documented evaluation.

When do I need to have an evaluation done?
Evaluation (or testing) must be done in the odd grade years (3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th), starting with 3rd grade.  The evaluation can be done at any point during the school year.  Most people choose to have them completed in the late winter/early spring months.

I am registered with CHEC. Can you do an evaluation for me?
Yes, we'd love to! A basic evaluation (either email or in-person) is what you will want to schedule with us.

My child is not in an odd grade year.  Can he/she still have an evaluation done?
Yes.  Evaluations can be done to provide parents with detailed information about their child's academic skills.  See the In Depth Evaluation page for more details. If you want detailed information about one subject area, check out our consultation skills assessments.  We offer skills assessments for reading, writing, and math.

I think I want to homeschool my kids next year, but don't know how to start.  Can you help me?
Yes! Please check out our Introduction to Homeschooling Consultant Package.  We love helping families start their homeschooling journey! .

What do I need to put in my letter of intent ( notice of intent ) to homeschool?
Here is a sample letter of intent, also called a notice of intent.  If you don't have Word, you can see the sample in this Google Doc.

Where are you located?
While our main office is in downtown Colorado Springs, we serve families all over Colorado via online evaluations, phone consultations, and we travel! We also consult on homeschooling topics (not state law requirements) throughout the US! Our main office is located at 24 South Weber St., Ste 205, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. We also conduct meetings in Woodland Park, CO and at VillaSport Cafe in northeast Colorado Springs.

Because of Covid-19 do homeschoolers still need to test or evaluate?
Yes, please see more info here.
