Learning through travel

I love to travel. I love to learn. Both things I'm hoping to instill a love of within my kids. 

Homeschooling is perfect for this. 

Without a school telling us our kids have too many absences, we have the freedom to travel when the opportunity arises - like when my husband is going somewhere for work. We can dictate when our school days and breaks will be. We can choose to take most or all of our vacations (and tag along trips) when public school is in session - which makes everywhere less crowded, and often cheaper. 

Learning is exciting for me. Interesting. Enjoyable. And I want to make sure my kids think so too. We choose what we want to learn about and how we want to learn. We have the option of when and where.  Where. That's the fun part. 

Our local library staff knows my family well.  We have our own special shelf for holds. They don't ask for my library card because they just type our name in the system.  They also know about all our current interests and where we are travelling next. 

Just this week, I picked up our latest stack of books (boy, do I love be able to put books on hold and the library sharing system our library is a part of!) The staff member checking out my books, started our conversation off with something to the effect of, "I can't wait to hear all about your next trip! It looks like you'll be gone awhile to see everything - at least a couple weeks?" Apparently, the stack of books about the Grand Canyon,  Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Disneyland, San Diego, Phoenix, and Santa Fe were pretty telling.

Yes, it will be awhile that we are gone (and lots of miles in the car.) And we can, because we homeschool.
